Awake
Actaully my daughter is still awake with me right now sitting on my lap playing with her toys .... so these last two blogs might be extremley short...... and I only have five mintues left so that is 2 1/2 minutes left per blog.......
IF I could just go one day without one person saying did u see that photo of so and so on facebook or did you hear so and so broke up again..... So usually to make my curiousity happy I have to check facebook the next chance that I get to check out the picture of so and so at the last huge rager i missed .... and about the couple that broke up ..... ya well they do it once a week end their facebook relationship status ..... and it is getting kinda old now..... I guess some people just don't care if they spill all their juice for the whole world to see or at least their entire contact lists..... it still gives me another reason why facebook is just a little out of hand with all the information being posted.

Don't get me wrong I still use facebook
The funny thing about my facebook usage is not gone in a totally different direction. I am not on their chattin' it up with my friends and looking at all the ridiculous drunk pictures of them wishing I was at that party or maybe glad I wasn't there~ But now I have switched to using facebook as keeping in contact for work. My job involves a lot of communication with a lot of different families both living close by and not. When I first took on the task of communication with these families trying to get their children ready for kindergarten it was really hard to get a hold of them. Most of the time they weren't home or never answered their phone. They would answer my text messages but no one would actually pick up the phone when I tried to call. So finally I thought and thought and thought until my little brain could no longer think and more and I realized that all of my families were my contacts on facebook. So I started sending messages to them and they were responding like crazy.... now why didn't I think of this before.... Maybe because my daughter made me feel bad for always being on the computer....
Anyways now I have a group for my parents to communicate with me and other families and I have to do is post one message letting everyone know when and where we are going to meet and they all show up... of course there is dinner provided!!! It makes my job a lot easier because I don't have to chase them all down individually

Losing friends as I type....
Since I started writing this blog about social networking sites I have realized how crazy it once was... and I say "once" only because I can proudly say that I don't use facebook nearly half as much as I did in September. I cannot really say if it is because I would rather make fun of all the people who are addicted to crackberry or if I really find it to be totally useless to me. Don't get me wrong I still go on there to check my messages and such but I am not stuck in front of my computer for hours talking to people on there. Or maybe the real reason is because when I use facebook chat it messes up everytime and I get pissed off at it.... and close the page.... who really knows....? It doesn't matter as long as I am finding more useful things to do with my what used to be facebook time.. Then again maybe if I was tuned in to crackberry all the time I may have had these blogs done a lot sooner..... but hey I still have 29 minutes.....
I have to say that I really enjoy being not locked into the computer all the time .... I have to tell you something that happened to me last month..... I was working on homework (typing something on the computer, I promise I was really working hard on some paper ) and my daughter was trying to get my attention for some reason I cannot exactly remember and I told her I was busy doing home work and her reply was ..... NO your NoT your just on facebook...... ((I really wasn't I was really doing homework I swear). I found it so funny. she is really to smart for me already.... SO anyways with a comment like that I had to stop doing my homework (really I was doing homework) and I got her whatever she wanted.... I think this was the real turning point of my facebook time and usage.

I told YOU So
Habermas recognises that societies need both varieties of communication. But he warns that unless we choose our institutions and technologies carefully, we can find ourselves living in a world (or in his case, returning to a world) in which the system overwhelms the life world, in which we spend our time conforming to rules rather than engaging in dialogue, carrying our tasks rather than partaking of experiences we can share with fellow humans. Our lives will increasingly be lived according to patterns that have no meaning or significance.
I took this from Rowlands book because it has facebook written all over it. Habermas is saying I told you so! It is so true that the system (facebook) overwhelms the life world. So many facebook users depend on their facebook to stay in touch with others through the system rather than making a phone call or dropping by a friends house for a visit. It is so much easier for us to click on their homepage and send them a message or go through their latest photo album to see what they have been up to lately. We know so much about these people without even having to have a conversation with them. People I only knew in high school (ones I never hung out with) but were in my class are on my facebook list. I keep them there just to see what they have been up to in the last few years that we've been out of high school. We'll have nothing to talk about at our 10 year reunion because we will know everything about everyone already. LOL......
So why did we let our world be taken over by the system if it overwhelms the life world so much? I think it is all about Convenience. The days are too short and there are not enough of them in a week or a month to do all of what we can accomplish on facebook in a few hours. There are so many people I wish I had the time to see and sit and have drink with or go to the park with. I have no time to fit this into my schedule. Maybe if there were 10 days a week and 34 hours in a day. But I would probably use that extra time to catch up on my sleep!!!!!
Within those few hours of facebook a week I have time to catch up with my old friends I no longer have time to go out and have a drink with. We send messages to each other.... talk on instant messanger when we are both logged on the computer at the same time and we can comment on each others photo's. This is why I stay in touch with those on facebook! CONVENIENCE.

Facebook Friends.
Anyways another thing that caught my eye was yesterdays 24 magazine. On the front cover it says "Text trumps talk". Studies show human contact takes back seat to technology. In this article it talks about how too many people are using chatting online and their cell phones rather than face to face conversations. According to 24 a new study shows that people connect 17 times per day electronically with others compared to only two face to face encounters. This is definately showing that we as a society are relying too much on our "new technology" to make our social connections.
Being on Facebook or MySpace all day is one thing, but actually spending that time with your friends is another. A relationship expert in the article talks about how people are losing out emotionally by not talking to people face to face. I have to agree with this. I have some friends on facebook who have over 1000 friends on thier list. Seriously are they really this person's friend or does this person just know of these people. Ok sure some of these people on his list might really be his friend but I have to say only about 10 of those people on his list he can call his true friends. This is the same for my page. I have around 500 friends but they are not what I would call "quality" friends. Maybe about 10 of those people on that list I would call my friend. The others are just peopel I know from school, work, team sport, or people i've met once or twice through other people. I would never call most of these people on my list and ask them if they want to come over and babysit my daughter, because I don't know them very well and trust them enough to be alone with my child. Or I would never ask them to go to a movie. We would probably have nothing to talk about because we don't know each other very well.
The ones that I actually call my friends are the ones that I don't even really talk to on facebook. Once in a while I may comment on a photo they posted or thier status. but these are the people that I talk to on the phone or hang-out with and go to dinner and a movie. The other 490 people on my friends list are people that I don't even want knowing that much information about me. I don't want them seeing pictures of me getting drunk at a party or of my family vacation. They do not need to know what I am doing or who I am doing it with. If I am having a bad day I am not going to post it on facebook for those people to see i am going to call one of my friends and go for a drink and talk.
Sometimes I think it is a competition to see who has the most friends!

Facebook vs MySpace
I don't even know where to begin. There is so much to say about these two social networking sites that I think I will have to start with me and my use for facebook and Myspace. It all began with me using Myspace to keep in contact with my family in California. Two summers ago I travelled down the a small town in Californa to visit my in-laws. My sister in-laws who are both years younger than me, spent very little time visiting with us when we were down there. They were always in thier rooms chatting on Messanger or Myspace. The youngest of the two was in her freshman year of highschool at the time was a pro at designing Myspace pages, people were coming over to the house to have her design thier pages for them. (I actually had her design my page for me too so that it wasn't so plain compared to most of the pages out there). NEways that was how I was introduced to myspace. I joined to keep in touch with them down there - it was cheaper than calling all the time and I could post pictures of us here and they would post pictures of them and the rest of the family down there. So now we were in contineous contact with one another through cyberspace. We still talk once or twice a week on the phone but this way they get to send me a picture of the prom dress they are going to be wearing and I can send them photo's of my daughter's birthday party that they couldn't make it to.
Facebook on the other hand there was no real reason why I joined the facebook banwagon, other than to be in contact with my friends. There is really no purpose for me to be on facebook but I still don't see myself closing my account anytime soon. I get to look at pictures of my friends and the events that I missed and comment on how I wish I was there with them, or how glad I am that I wasn't there with them!!! MY facebook is really low key compared to other people's who have to add every new application that comes out. mine has the basic: my name; a picture of me; photoalbums; the wall; groups; friends and the minifeed. I posted some pictures on thier for others too look at, ones of events that happened and I could tag others in them. I used to have pictures of my daughter on there with her name so that people who don't live close could see her but then I deleted those because I don't want strangers looking at her, who knows what types of creepy people are out there! I have tried to get my family in California to join facebook but they still refuse and they choose to stick with Myspace.
With this (what I thought was going to be) brief introduction of where I am with Facebook and Myspace I will have to leave you with this for now and come back and discuss my view of people showing to much information on these social networks.
